Empty Orchestra, longing for you
“I have always been fascinated by these spaces that disconnect individuals from daily reality to bring them into another form of interaction,” states the performer and choreographer. Karaoke is one such space: people reveal themselves there, with desires on display, without the pressure of judgment or perfection. For the duration of a song, the individual tells their story, at the heart of a collective moment.
Habib Ben Tanfous’s research revolves around vulnerability, which here becomes a vector of connection, a way to “share a common space where one is not afraid to open up.” This Empty Orchestra does not shy away from kitsch, an essential ingredient, and cultivates the fluidity of interaction between performers and the audience – who can thus become an actor in the micro-fictions created through love songs, a universally pop common thread.
