Here I Bequeath What Is Not Mine
With the solo Here I Bequeath What Is Not Mine, Brussels choreographer Habib Ben Tanfous traces what constitutes him. Even before his birth, Habib, great-grandson of Habib, inherited this name and its history. How do these narratives take root in his life? Where do they reside? Are they truly his own? Drawing inspiration from family archives, childhood memories, and recent personal events, Habib Ben Tanfous makes his body the epicenter of his research and the medium of his language. Visceral, delicate, singular, his vocabulary translates the intimate ambivalences of an omnipresent heritage, around which he composes an incisive and moving dance. To tremble, to whisper, to straighten up, to look ahead, to turn back sometimes, to shed the burden of heritage while drawing strength from its richness, to embrace its joys while accepting its melancholy. At the heart of these multiple variations of movement lies the attempt to respond to the echoes of the past by inhabiting the present.
By engaging with the music and voices that populate the space, Habib Ben Tanfous reminds us that we are not alone, but surrounded by the presences of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Through them, he asks us: of these things bequeathed to us, what, in turn, should we pass on? From son to father and from father to daughter. And since life follows the cycle we know, isn’t it time to catch our breath, to sing, and to whirl?
Here I Bequeath What Is Not Mine is both a testamentary act and a declaration of love. From this antagonism emerges an implacable force: that of affirming the power, both plural and unique, of being oneself and in the world.
